October
2008 - Mission Update
Dear
friends and supporters,
Whew!
That's what we have been saying since Sunday night after
the evening service. We have just finished up an intense
period of activity and blessing.
We
just said good-bye to a construction team from Calvary Baptist
Church of Winter Garden, Florida. They came on Saturday,
October 4 and left on the 11 and 12th. They worked hard
on the building and we worked hard to make it possible for
them to do so. They put up an internal and external gutter
system for our auditorium roof, built our platform and (mostly)
baptistery, put lights in our stairwell and ran power and
lights to diverse parts of the building. They cleaned out
an enormous amount of construction debris and made provisional
coverings for our window (or window holes). Another major
job was putting our water storage tanks (two 1000-liter
tanks) up on top of the auditorium. I'm probably leaving
something out. (You can see pictures on our blog. http://fromtheforandesk2.blogspot.com/
)
The
preparation for and supervision of a mission team visit
is probably one of the busiest things we do. But the benefits,
both spiritual and physical, always make us glad to have
them come. This group was especially fun to have around
too. Being mostly “old folks” they went to bed early and
only needed coffee to keep them going. Why
don't you plan a trip?
Just
prior to the team visit we had a weeklong visit with a potential
pastor and his family. The church liked them very much and
has asked them to return to officially candidate for our
church. Pray that we'll be lead of the Holy Spirit to just
the right pastor.
At
the same time we have been having a special campaign called,
“Go and make disciples” from Matthew 28:19-20. We
are challenging everyone first to be a disciple of Christ
and then make disciples. Each week participants fill in
slips of paper in which they record tracts distributed,
Bible studies done or given to others, daily Bible readings,
visitors brought, etc. The slips are different colors and
we are making a chain that will hopefully show spiritual
progress. We're having several of the missionaries that
we support give their reports and are taking a special offering
for the church planting project of Pastor Lucio in the city
of Boituva. We have scheduled a church wide distribution
of evangelistic packets in the neighborhood, special training
sessions for workers and evangelistic programs. So far,
the participation has been good. New families and visitors
are coming and new people are volunteering for teaching
and serving. We have new believers waiting for our baptistery
to be finished. Pray for growth in discipleship.
A
special blessing relates to our construction. Not only did
the team from Calvary do a great amount of work, they also
left around $1,000 to continue the work. While they were
here three other churches sent a total of $14,000 for the
same purpose. Praise the Lord for this help. Pray for continued
progress on the building.
All
of us are concerned about the worldwide economic crisis.
We trust the living God who is able to do much more than
we can ask or think. Continue to pray for us as we serve
the Lord.
